Airport The BIG A "Little Boy" 2-16 is perfect for smaller asphalt patching jobs needing a Compact Infrared Asphalt Heater, or where storage and hauling spaces are limited. The BIG A LB 2-16 comes standard with two (2) 2’ x 4’ Heating Zones, giving you 16 sq ft of heating area to work with and this design is unique because the entire heating bed lifts up for transit and storage, making it very compact compared to our other models. Weighing in at 275 lbs, with the unique dolly design, one man can easily handle the movement of this unit when compared to operating the much heavier and larger units on the market.
The main purpose of using a portable infrared asphalt heater, is to in-place recycle existing asphalt by raising it to the temperature that is required for proper hot mix asphalt. (usually around 350º F)
By raising the temperature of the existing asphalt and softening the existing binder, it allows the old asphalt to be re-used, rejuvenated and mixed with new patch to creates a "like new" patch, without the overhead of cutting out the entire asphalt section and filling it back in with all new hot asphalt patch. In reality, the only time a full cut and replacement is necessary is when the sub-grade needs fixing. Why go to the trouble of cutting and removing the old when you can simply just re-use it in place?
The benefit to owning the BIG A LB 2-16 is the compact storage setup. When lifting the heating bed, it reduces the transit dimensions to only 30” x 49” x 58” (L x W x H). An infrared asphalt patching machine like the BIG A 2-16 is used for a wide variety of asphalt repair needs. One of the more common uses is to re-use the existing asphalt and simply scarify several of the surface levels, add a rejuvenator and additional hot mix, then blend it all together. This type of setup works fantastic for alligator asphalt areas, bird baths, large cracks and continuous dips.
Using an infrared asphalt patcher isn't hard, but does require steps to ensure the right patching work is performed.
